Just before noon, police in Newark responded to a report that a black Honda Odyssey wanted in connection with a felony was observed in the 200 block of 21st Street in Irvington, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said.
The driver of the wanted vehicle fled, initiating a pursuit onto the Garden State Parkway North, Fragé said. The suspect proceeded to put the vehicle into reverse, crashing into the Newark police vehicle, Fragé said. The suspect then exited the vehicle and fled on foot across the parkway, Fragé said.
A police detective was transported to University Hospital after complaining of pain, Fragé said. The incident remains under investigation, Fragé said.
